Statement of Purpose

Information, in today’s world, is considered as the fifth most productive resource along with men, machines, material, and money. One of the most powerful forces in our environment and by far the most important for any organization at large is Information technology. The last two decades have witnessed numerous developments of new trends in engineering and technologies. The rapidly changing demands and possibilities on the world market need high-level flexibility and adaptability of the organizational systems. Information technology has emerged as a key player affecting our personal, social and public life and has made a significant impact on the quality of life. It helps to optimize the use of scarce resources through intelligent information support for decision-making, and helps further in its implementation by supporting coordination effort without wasteful delays.

I have been fascinated by computer technology and it amazes me how networking applications and Information technology have shrunk the world. Although I have taken up EXTC as a core engineering course, I kept my interest on in IT. I learnt computer skills, Internet technologies and IT enabled services. During this process I developed strong, technical & analytical skills. As I delved deeper in the subject I came across various courses like Industrial Economics and Management, Software Engineering and Project Management that appealed me immensely. During my diploma years, subjects such as computer fundamentals, programming of C, C++ and visual basics, computer architecture, together aided to my liking for computers and programming. The exposure to technical subjects infused a thought process, which was both logical and creative aiding me to design several mini projects. I successfully implemented ‘Solar energy powered microcontroller based stepper motor controlling’ as my final year project and got well versed with concepts of  C programming as a mode of software that controls the hardware of the project.

My final year project at the B.E level was on “Health monitoring system using GPRS” was a perfect amalgamation of electrical, information and communication technologies and opened an altogether different horizon to me. It bestowed me with an opportunity to work on real time data. Patient’s body parameters are sensed using a sensor and the information is encoded and sent at the doctor’s end using GPRS. By this project I got the opportunity to learn languages such as Embedded C and visual basics.  I realized the enormity of the amount of data that flows through the organization and how important it is to stay highly organized to convert this data to useful information. This experience in itself has been extremely fulfilling as I learnt not only to work in a team with people of varied temperaments in different situations but also deal with seniors at various ranks, an experience I found very intimidating initially. Besides this, it also taught me responsibility, ability to plan and I felt the sense of achievement that comes with completing the work under stringent deadlines.

I applied to the INTO Mason pathway program because I was aware that I needed to work on my language skills, more of the program outlines the key difference between Western and non-Western education systems. It helped me understand and acquire skills required by a degree seeking master’s student in the U.S

Recently Information Technology has emerged as a tool to empower people, we must recognize that it is not just another technology but a unique historical opportunity to transform old inefficient processes into user friendly, convenient and accessible & reachable solutions. I feel it is in this and related fields that I can best combine my abilities and interests to make original contributions to ongoing research. As the ultimate objective is specialization, the undergraduate education is not completely satisfying.

A great deal of introspection and self-evaluation has gone into my decision of applying to George Mason University, MS in Applied Information Technology program. Your University ranks high amongst the many universities across US for this course I am confident that the first-rate research facilities available, supported by the excellent faculty will definitely produce the top quality graduates that I desire to be. I hope to develop the expertise and eventually contribute my best in raising the productivity of, already flourishing, IT industry.

I look forward to an interesting and mutually rewarding association through graduate studies at your university and I am confident that it will be an enriching experience.
